Wearing Perfume

Perfumes are first and foremost, an invitation to happiness.  Perfumes, fragrances and pleasant odors display a healthy and seductive condition of well being.

Wearing Perfume

The art of perfuming oneself is a pleasure accessible to all.  Here are a few guidelines and tips one should be aware of in order to fully appreciate fragrances and their powers of attraction.

Skin Types

A fragrance scent differs dramatically depending on the wearer’s skin.  Four factors determine the way a perfume changes once applied:

  • Perspiration – the more a person perspires, the less lasting the perfume.

  • Skin acidity or pH – this affects the quality of the odorous molecules altering the harmony of the accords.

  • Skin’s profile – rough skin retains fragrances, smooth skin allows them to escape more rapidly.

  • Skin’s fat content – those with a heavier fat content retain perfume the longest.

How and Where to Apply Perfume

Coco Chanel always stated that one should apply fragrance where one liked to be kissed.  The best areas are on the pulse points, where the pulse of the heartbeat is closest to the skin.  For example, at the base of the neck, behind the ear lobes, between the breasts, the underside of the wrists and behind the knees.  Hair is also a wonderful retainer of odors.  One drop applied to the roots is sufficient to create a trail.

Always apply perfume or any fragrance before dressing, as not to soil clothing.  Fine fabrics such as satin and silk can discolor.

Remove pearls and jewellery before applying perfume.  They too can stain.

A good perfume is made up of three levels:

Top Note:  The first scent impression once the fragrance has been applied to the skin.  Top notes are designed to be light and volatile in order to set the sensory stage for the development of the middle and base notes.

Middle Note or Heart Note:  These harmonious blends of fragrance ingredients are slower and more voluptuous than the top note.  The dominant notes designate the fragrance family, for instance, floral, chypre, oriental, spicy, or green.  It can take up to ten minutes for the middle or heart notes to develop fully on the skin.

Base Note:  is responsible for the underlying tones of the fragrance and its lasting quality.  The base note is the final phase of the fragrance development which appears several hours after application.

Remember:  The memory of a scent becomes stronger than reality!
